Become a Justice Outside Board Member

OAKLAND, Calif. – August 12, 2026

 Justice Outside Board Member Role

The Justice Outside Board brings together leaders from across nonprofit and for-profit sectors who are dedicated to advancing racial equity and justice in the outdoors. As Justice Outside navigates a period of significant change and refreshed strategy, new board members will have an important opportunity to help shape and guide the organization’s vision, priorities, and path forward.

Justice Outside is currently navigating a significantly changing funding landscape. Shifts in federal priorities, alongside broader changes in the philanthropic and public policy environment, are affecting how racial justice and environmental work are supported and sustained. This evolving landscape presents meaningful challenges, but also an important opportunity to strengthen our organization, deepen our partnerships, and ensure that environmental justice remains a vital part of the broader movement for a more equitable future. We are seeking board members who are excited to help Justice Outside navigate this moment with vision, resilience, and a commitment to the communities and movements at the heart of our work.

Why Join Now?

Joining the Justice Outside Board at this moment requires courage, conviction, and a willingness to help steward the organization through uncertainty. It also offers a meaningful opportunity to influence what comes next.

Our current circumstances demand difficult choices, but they also create an opportunity to clarify what is most essential, strengthen the work that has the greatest impact, and build toward a future in which Justice Outside can grow. We are seeking board members who are prepared to engage at that level: bringing expertise, resources, relationships, and strategic perspective while remaining deeply grounded in the communities and movements Justice Outside serves.

If you believe in a future where racial equity and justice are fundamental to the outdoor movement, and if you are ready to help Justice Outside navigate this moment while building toward that future, we invite you to consider joining our Board.

The Role of the Board

The Justice Outside Board provides macro-level governance and oversight, including responsibility for the organization’s financial health. Board members trust and support the CEO to lead and execute day-to-day operations while working together to provide strategic direction, accountability, and long-term stewardship.

This is a particularly consequential moment to join the Board. New members will help Justice Outside navigate near-term financial realities while also shaping the organization’s long-term vision,  sustainability, and impact.

Justice Outside is especially eager to consider candidates who bring experience in:

  • Law, particularly nonprofit, employment, environmental, or public-interest law
  • Finance, including nonprofit financial strategy, organizational sustainability, or investment
  • Fundraising, philanthropy, and outdoor industry, including experience cultivating major donors and institutional relationships
  • State- or national-level policy change and programs
  • Expansive networks, relationships, and influence in priority regions, particularly among communities, funders, policymakers, advocates, and corporate  partners aligned with our mission

We are looking for leaders who can bring both expertise and a deep commitment to racial equity, environmental justice, and the transformative potential of the outdoors.

A Board of Donors and Ambassadors

Justice Outside Board membership carries a significant philanthropic and relational commitment. Board members are expected to place Justice Outside among their top three charitable giving priorities and to make a meaningful financial contribution to the organization.

Board members are also expected to help cultivate gifts from their social and professional networks, with support from Justice Outside’s advancement staff. This role is not simply about making a financial contribution, it is about opening doors, building relationships, and helping Justice Outside sustain the resources necessary to advance its mission..

  • Actively engage, prepare for, and attend quarterly Board meetings and respond in a timely manner to organization communications.
