Since 2001, the Duwamish River Community Coalition (DRCC) has worked towards community representation and a holistic ecosystem well-being for the Duwamish River Superfund site. DRCC’s mission is to elevate the voices of those impacted by the Duwamish River pollution and other environmental injustices for a clean, healthy, equitable environment for people and wildlife. Over the decades, DRCC’s programming has evolved to address the intersections of environmental, climate, and social and racial justice by focusing on youth empowerment, public health, anti-displacement, economic development and resilience for the Duwamish Valley. Using this community-centered approach, their team is drawing links between systemic oppression and environmental justice and building community power to address these barriers to a just transition and to effect genuine and systemic change. We envision an empowered Duwamish Valley community that is thriving in place.
