Working out of the South Valley community of Albuquerque, the Center for Social Sustainability focuses on maintaining their local acequia – irrigation – system to deliver water for irrigation. Acequias are the lifeblood of their community as they carry water from the river into their community, which includes several small towns. Through their Cultivando Nuestro Future Leadership Institute and the Ce Akatl programs, they explore local culture/history, acequia related policy landscapes and challenges that prepares them to engage in restorative work to reposition acequias as community assets that people should use not only for irrigation but for recreation and a source of pride.
