Support Outdoor Educators Institute in 2020

Justice Outside’s Outdoor Educators Institute (OEI) is changing lives—and not just those of its participants, but the lives of all those around them.

“OEI has impacted my personal and professional life by showing me a different narrative in which people of color are fierce leaders in the outdoor industry. Through OEI, I gained skills to feel confident leading in the outdoors, learned from other incredible individuals that inspired me, and became part of a large family of educators.”

– Cristina Navarro, OEI graduate

“OEI has been a kickstarter for me in my professional life. I did not think the outdoors was something I could build a career in until I completed OEI. Ever since then, I have found jobs with organizations that partnered with OEI, and have found myself in the depths of outdoor and environmental education.”

– Amy Tam, OEI graduate

Our 2019 Outdoor Educators Institute was a huge success and we need your support to grow the program in 2020!

This past fall, in the Bay Area, 17 young adults challenged themselves in ways they had never expected possible. They paddled through ocean waves in sea kayaks, climbed up rock faces, and backpacked on trails far away from the city. For many, this was their first time participating in this type of activity.

They have also challenged themselves to think deeply about how to create equity, inclusion, and cultural relevancy in the outdoor and environmental fields – so they can embody leadership roles in fostering change.

Last fall, 25 young adults in the Bay Area participated in OEI. For the first time, we expanded OEI to two cohorts, launching a new group in the South Bay. And as we look to reach even more young adults, we’re planning to add a third cohort in 2020!
