San Francisco / Oakland cohort
Summer Johnson (she/her)
Growing up in San Francisco and Oakland, I always appreciated nature from a distance, but until I had friends who had “real” experience outside, I didn’t have the confidence (or resources) to go out and try many outdoor activities on my own. I’m excited about this opportunity to appreciate my home in this way, meet folks with similar interests, and to be able to share what I learn with others. I currently work as a middle school English teacher in Oakland, and I am constantly imagining ways to cultivate a more empowering and humanizing classroom that challenges and impacts students. I want to grow by pushing my limits, reflecting on barriers to the outdoors, and thinking about how to incorporate outdoor learning into my classroom to center students’ lives, creativity, and healing. I enjoy dancing, biking and yoga in my free time and love exploring the biking trails and beaches in the Bay Area.
